Voice Vid of the Week!

Occasionally we will highlight vocal performances that we feel truly honor the human voice as one of the most powerful and organic instruments on the planet. Check back often to hear examples of varying voice qualities from across the vocal disciplines.
A sample of Nina Simone singing
"Feelings" at the Montreaux Jazz Festival.

The incomparable Nina Simone provides for all

who dare follow her into this vocal exploration an example of interpretation. In much the same way she always does, she extracts the essence of each word and without apology or second thought illuminates each word as its own separate story. The story is in the words. The medicine is in her voice.

The voice in this song is seen and heard. Heard audibly as she meditates each word. Seen in how she gives herself over to the expressions which take over her face and radiate through her fingers into the piano. It is her movement. Minimalistic is this interpretation. There are no ornate vocal riffs and runs, yet the complexity of emotion is palpable.

Voice is much more than the study of the sound that comes out of our mouths. It is much more.
